At Magnomatics we are proud of the fact that we have an outstanding staff retention rate and an exceptional team across the board. Due to our ever-growing project and customer base, we were faced with a new experience in terms of recruitment this past year – we had to actively expand the team.
In January we set on three new starters: Orrin Sweeting-Dixon as Junior Project Manager, Owen Birks as Workshop Team Leader, and Tapi Mandishona, a graduate Mechanical Design Engineer. Each brought key skills to the business and settled-in very well.
As a business we encourage the development of new engineers. We actively support this by offering work experience opportunities, as well as Summer and Year in Industry placements to engineering students from the local universities. This year we completed our student recruitment activities in April, with two students – Richard Carter and Alex Daniel – joining us for a three-month placement during their summer break, while Chris Peston and Jimmy Mason signed on for their third-year industry placement.
Magnomatics has supported student placements for many years, and we have always found them to be mutually beneficial; the students gain valuable experience working on real-world projects in a dynamic environment, while we are able to identify and support the promising engineers of the future. In fact, a quarter of our current team were once Year in Industry placements and have returned to work with us permanently.
Although there are some roles where a university degree is required, it is not the only route into engineering. One alternative is an apprenticeship, and we eagerly welcomed two apprentices in 2022. Linas Domarkas is working towards becoming a Mechanical Fitter and Eesa Rehman is focused on Automation and Control.
Then, following several new enquiries and a repeat order from an existing customer, we successfully recruited a new Workshop Technician in June. Grant Roberts is responsible for supporting our manufacturing team with the increasing workshop, build and test activity.
Finally, we recently welcomed Robbie Kinghorn, another former placement student, who successfully applied for a role as a Control Engineer.
This past year has seen our team go from strength to strength, with the company seeing the highest level of recruitment in a decade.
With increased levels of interest in our energy efficient magnetically geared machines, we are looking forward to 2023 and what it will bring.
