It’s National Apprenticeship Week!
Magnomatics has always been committed to supporting the future generations of engineers, and Apprenticeships are one of the very best ways to do this. The engineering and manufacturing industries have experienced recruitment challenges in recent years and there continue to be gaps in the vital skill sets that Apprenticeships can fill. The appeal of Apprenticeships should not be underestimated; the apprentice gains the opportunity to forge a career in engineering and to earn a wage whilst training. The company provides support with learning, training and development and ends with an expertly trained and fully competent member of staff.
Magnomatics is proud to have been training – and retaining - apprentices since 2015, supported by the AMRC Training Centre. Our first apprentice was Owen Birks. Owen initially joined us for a work experience placement via the WorkWise Summer Camp nearly ten years ago. Owen successfully completed his Mechanical Maintenance apprenticeship in 2018 and he has progressed to the position of Operations Team Leader with us. “My duties include support and supervision of my team, planning workloads and procedures, continuous improvement and managing health and safety. This would not be possible without the care and support from Magnomatics throughout my apprenticeship, particularly in personal development tasks. Taking the apprenticeship route has opened up new doors for me personally, leading to internal promotions and a recognition through training and additional qualifications.”
In 2019 we recruited Dillon Christopherson via the AMRC. Dillon had chosen the Product Design and Development apprenticeship course to align with his interests in engineering and design. Following successful completion of his apprenticeship, Dillon was also asked to stay with Magnomatics permanently. He is now a fully-fledged and experienced member of the operations team and is using his skills across our range of innovative projects. “I came straight out of secondary school into my apprenticeship and the first benefit I gained was the adjustment from school into a working mindset. I come from a family with a strong engineering background, so engineering is always something I wanted to do and through the AMRC and Magnomatics I was able to achieve my goal. I am now a fully qualified member of the engineering team, actively building prototypes and batches of production motors. The experience I gained from doing my apprenticeship has given me valuable knowledge to also help support and train Linas.”
Our newest apprentice, Linas Domarkas, is in his second year of training as a Mechanical Fitter. Linas has finished the majority of his offsite training and is now immersed in in-company learning and developing his skills and knowledge of company processes.
“Apprenticing with Magnomatics has allowed me a great opportunity to develop practical skills alongside the associated theory preparing me for work through practiced learning. I would definitely recommend an apprenticeship to anyone who is willing to put the effort in.”
Magnomatics is planning to recruit another apprentice for the Operations Team in 2024. We will be attending the ‘Apprenticeships – Be Inspired’ event in Sheffield on Thursday 7th March.
